Mentor, Coach, and a Sherpa

Why people aren’t students (i.e. why someone doesn’t want coaching)

  • The student doesn’t want coaching
    • Willingness
      • isn’t willing to do the work: could be due to life season, work ethic, lack of long-term goal and motivation to hit, or content with where they’re at.
    • ego
      • doesn’t want to be told what to do
    • lack of conviction
      • doesn’t think it will work
    • level mismatch
      • the student is at a different level than where the program is at. Ex: I don’t want a basic coaching platform.
    • Bad experience
      • Student had a bad experience with a coaching platform
  • The teacher appears when the student is ready. You can take a horse to water but you can’t make them drink.

Why do coaching programs fail with a good student

  • Too broad
    • Don’t tell me to call 100 Realtors when I changing companies
    • Saying the same as every other coaching company
  • Not customized & invested in student
    • You can get a book that is perfectly suited for exactly where you are, and lays out everything you need to. BUT students won’t do it if they don’t have the coach to hold accountable.

Why coaching works

  • Accountability
  • Compeition
  • Networking

Counselor, psychiatrist, therapist, mental coach, mirror, advisor, personality something, guidance counselor, internal teacher, self-discovery, superior, hard wire doctor, personal growth, trainer, self discovery, habit master, self-destructor, helper, character development, work wife/spouse, reality coach, design coach, guidance counselor, doctor (prescribes the treatment, the coach monitors), consulting, sherpa, business council, board member, guidance parter

Counselor vs guidance counsel – guidance has a destination/result oriented.

Need a word to describe that they know me.

Rubber Ducky, Your Echo, Mirror

You produced the echo.

I know when someone is wrong but I ask questions so they self-correct. I can’t tell them they way, they have to find it. BUT I help guide them. (bumper bowl).

Training wheels, navigator, guard rails

Guidance Guardian Guide

Guardian – protector implies they know you, want to keep you safe, has your interest at heart.

Now we need something that implies thye know where to point you (although may not know the destination. Help you see yourself and find your own way. Think parent helping a kid.

Guardian

Guide – field guide booklet, trip guide, fly fishing guide, sherpa.

Mentor (Wisdom/Mindset/By example/focus on the mentor, not you/example of what they’ve done – doesn’t have to be your industry. Knows “business”. Big picture, principles, smart, wise, etc.

Coach (Accountability)

Guide (direction) – is in your industry. Knows how to execute and do the task at hand. You wouldn’t hire a fly fishing guide in Montana to take your big game hunting in Africa.

Advisor (Direction)

Business Counselor (Advice, help with a situation, focus is on you. Gives solutions and alternatives, supports you, pit crew, caddie, sherpa.)
