When Is the Right Time to Call?
If you’ve ever hesitated before picking up the phone, wondering whether it’s too early or too late to call, you’re not alone. It’s a common concern, but here’s the truth: bold action drives results. Let’s break down the “when to call” debate, so you can confidently connect with your clients and build those relationships that fuel your business.
Calling Hours: The Early Bird Wins the Business
When it comes to phone calls, 8:00 AM is fair game. Why? Because 8 to 5 are standard calling hours, and most professionals expect communication during this window. Some worry about interrupting morning routines—like school drop-offs or coffee runs—but here’s the thing: if they’re unavailable, they won’t answer. Simple as that.
That said, timing can vary depending on your audience. For example:
- Builders often don’t start their day until 10:00 AM. Catch them during their commute around 9:30 when they’re in the car and more likely to chat.
- Top producers (realtors, builders, etc.) are ready to talk early. These high performers value their time and often start their day before 8:00 AM.
A real-life example? One top-producing realtor texted at 7:18 AM to follow up on a conversation we had planned. That’s the mindset of someone who’s chasing excellence—ready to work, early and often.
Why Early Calls Matter
Calling early during standard calling hours has benefits beyond just convenience. By reaching out before the whirlwind of the day takes over, you:
- Catch clients when they’re focused.
- Give them the full workday to respond or send over needed documents.
- Show initiative and professionalism.
- Pro Tip: Sometimes, I’ll even call Mountain or West Coast contacts at 7:00 AM their time. Yes, it’s bold, but it works. If I catch them before their day gets busy, we can tackle priorities early. Worst case? They remind me of the time difference, and I move on.
The Evening Cut-Off: Know Your Boundaries
While mornings are golden, the evening is where I draw the line. For me, 6:00 PM is the hard stop for calling hours. Why?
Family time matters. After 6:00, it’s time for the kiddos and family.
Boundaries build habits. If you call late, you’re training clients to think you’re available at all hours. That might work for some, but it’s not my style.
If you prefer to work later, go for it—just know that you’re setting a precedent. Be intentional about what works best for your lifestyle and business.
Don’t Overthink It: Start Dialing
At the end of the day, the most important takeaway is this: make the call. Don’t let fear of the “perfect time” hold you back. High performers appreciate initiative. If they’re unavailable, they’ll let it go to voicemail. What matters is that you’re showing up, being proactive, and chasing opportunities.
So set that alarm, start dialing at 8:00 AM, and watch your business grow. As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts—do you agree, disagree, or have tips of your own? Let’s keep the conversation going and keep chasing excellence.
